What is Origami?

Origami is the Japanese Art of paper folding. In modern usage, the word “origami” from Japanese oru “to fold” and kami “paper”. is often used as an inclusive term for all folding practices, regardless of their culture of origin. Many studies assert that origami was invented by the Japanese about a thousand years ago, but its roots may well be in China. It is also highly probable that the process of folding was applied to other materials before paper was invented, so the origins of recreational folding may lie with cloth or leather. Certainly, within Europe, the practice of napkin folding and cloth pleating was held in high esteem. However, paper has proved to be the ideal material to fold, and so it is logical to assume that paper folding followed the discovery of the papermaking process.

What is Quilling?

Quilling, sometimes called paper rolling or paper filigree, is a decorative art form that uses colored paper strips. These strips are coiled, curled, and twisted to create decorative designs. this art form has a long history that is still being kept alive by many artists. Paper quilling can be traced back to the 15th century. However, some historians believe it originated in Ancient Egypt taking the feather ‘quills’ from birds to roll the paper. Although the exact origins are somewhat of a mystery, one thing we know to be true is that quilling was widely practiced and at the height of popularity in 18th-century France, Italy, and England.

The Quilling I do is all hand designed and drawn out then paper quilled. Sometimes I add a background or let the 3D paper art do the talking. I am self taught, when I was giving a kit from a friend that got to frustrated with the art and how tedious it can be. I started out making cards and that grew to framed pieces of art. Now I also teach others how to do this fascinating art form.
